About AA

Hello. I am an academic from Ireland, working in the UK higher education sector, who wishes to engage in lively discussion on the world of academia, politics and culture. The gravatar I use is not me, of course, but the Italian Marxist, Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937).  I started this blog about 6 years ago withe naive intent to maintain anonymity. That didn’t last very long at all. Still, why change the name? (Although I notice that some academic group somewhere in the UK set up their own blog much later on, which they called Academics Anonymous. Cheeky or what?)

You do realise that the in picture of you clutching the red flag, you look uncannily like Jason Donovan? Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good look.

  2. Excuse me, Rab! You mean, Comrade Jason Donovan from that Bolshevik propaganda vehicle, Neighbours? Hmmm. I didn’t realise the uncanny similarity. Still, you’re right. It is a good look. Pity I had to crop it, though. The full frame shows Comrade Jason smashing his fist down on a board room table, terrorising the plutocrats sitting around it. I must try that at the next Faculty Board. It would certainly surprise them. But would it backfire on me? I’d probably wreck my hand and spoil the moment with a call for a doctor.

Anyway, I’m trying to get a translation of the slogan on the flag. I think it has something to do with the third world.

You do realise that you now look like John Sessions in that TV docu-drama about the Italian Marxist they put in prison. I preferred it when you looked like Jason Donovan

Great blog. I started one the month after you (though it isn’t a hundredth as good) – http://www.smiledontfrown.me.uk Keep up the good work.

    • Thanks, Neil. Glad you like it because it’s not easy getting established and known. For a while, I wondered what the point was but then my latest post on Panorama has attracted a lot of attention. My blogger friend, Rabelais, told me it’s like tending to a garden – you’ve got to keep working on it and add lots of colour to encourage cross pollination! I had a look at yours and you’re certainly vexed by many of the same issues. I must visit soon and read your stuff on John Simpson. In the meantime, I’ve linked you in my blogroll! Keep the flag flying!
